It’s been quite a journey for me, but writing down the lessons I’ve learned from my own experiences and sharing it with others has been a very valuable exercise. At the same time, it’s reminded me that a big part of leadership is sharing expertise and knowledge with others.

Sharing knowledge and expertise: a win-win for leaders and teams

Recently, I passed a small personal landmark – the publishing of my 50th blog. The journey of sharing my experience has been a big one for me, helping me reflect on how leaders need to guide others by passing knowledge and expertise on to others.

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to one another.” John F Kennedy.

Recently, I realised something – I’ve written more than 50 editions of my blog! It’s not a huge milestone in the scheme of things, but for me it was really significant. It has allowed me to think deeply and share the expertise I’ve gained running my business over the past years.

I’d been meaning to write a blog for some time. As someone who was a communications professional in my past professional life, it should have been easy, and yet it wasn’t. I keep offering myself all the usual excuses – how busy I was, how my focus was elsewhere. There was another reason though – it was difficult to put my own knowhow on the page, even though I’d been doing it professionally for others for years.

However, once I started, it was amazing how much insight flowed from my experience. It has been wonderful to share. It reminded me of one of the most important roles of a leader – to teach others and share what they know. And of course, to keep learning themselves.

Positioning yourself as an expert

When I first started blogging, I wasn’t quite so aware of all the ideas I had in my head around leadership and team development. I knew I was proficient at my job, and that I’d been doing it for a while and that I had acquired a lot of knowledge in the process.

Yet, when I started to put them on the page it delighted me how many tips and insights I was able to pull out.

I also realised that I had something to add to the commentary out there (and there’s a lot), particularly around our unique horse-based approach. Sharing lessons learnt from our horses in our professional programs, for example around how horses show us how to work in herds/teams, or help us communicate, or elicit honesty, or remind us to be present.

The technique we use here, which is called Equine Assisted Learning, is something that isn’t understood or known that well until you’ve experienced it yourself. And it has been amazing to showcase what we do in a way that is relevant to our clients who are largely non-horsey.

All leaders should realise the same – that their experience, expertise and knowledge is worthwhile sharing.

Helping others learn

Lifelong learning is essential for everyone – even (or especially) those who are already leaders. It doesn’t have to be formal learning, but can be as simple as an everyday exchange of ideas or knowledge within a team.

As I’ve written before, excellent leaders should take charge of inspiring those around them to learn, as well as, share their expertise. They will also nurture the ideas of their people.

However, sometimes it can be hard for leaders to realise and then articulate what the expertise is and how we can use it to help others. Like me with my blog!

My advice is to trust yourself and just get started putting the words to page. It doesn’t have to be complicated, convoluted or controversial. In fact, the simpler the better.

A few of my favourites

After writing more than 50 blogs, it’s hard to pick just a few, but here they are: some of the ones I’m most fond of and think contain great leadership lessons.

Do you want an elephant in the room – or a horse. A fun (but insightful) look at why bringing a horse into a room opens up honest lines of communication which can remain hidden for years in a work environment.

Sh**t happens: What’s important is how you respond. Yes, I actually did it. I wrote an entire. blog about horse manure. However, as always, I had a serious point here about how we when inevitably hit tough times, we have the choice to either wallow or keep going.

My lucky break: lessons on the power of positive thinking. This is a more recent one, but it’s an important one for me as it shares a lot of lessons learnt from a big personal journey.

Four leadership lessons from your inner child. Being passionate, direct and open to learning new things. That’s something all leaders need!

Your presence: the best present you can give this holiday season…and always. Horses teach us a lot about presence, and it is a powerful message to share.

Expertise: the value of lifelong learning

To be an ‘expert’ is not a finite thing. A true expert never thinks they know everything and is always seeking to deepen their knowledge and enhance their skills. Expertise can be gained in a number of ways, and it’s important to ensure we are continuously learning in order to remain at the top of our game.

I’ve been on a high for the past week. Why? We hosted a lovely retreat for women called ‘Authentic You’ where our participants find their own self-truths with the help of our horses.

It was excellent on so many levels, not just because it’s been a welcome return to face-to-face workshops, but because I genuinely love seeing how powerful the experience is for our participants. There were plenty of what I call ‘aha moments’ where people had fresh revelations about themselves.

And, as always, I had my own revelations that help enhance my professional development. Our programs all centre around leadership – encouraging people to find their inner leader and authentic leadership style.

One of our horses, Bart, is great at helping our participants do just that! In order to successfully lead Bart, our participants must be clear and congruent in their interactions with him. During our retreat, everything was going smoothly for Bart and his human team mate, Kim. However, all of a sudden no matter how clear Kim’s communication appeared, Bart did not want to follow. I had to really dig deep to facilitate around what could be happening in their team to get them moving forward again.

It really reinforced the value of continued on-the-job learning, and reminded me that no matter how much of an ‘expert’ we are in our given field, there is always more to learn.

The value of lifelong learning

I am a big believer in experience as a teacher – and I do genuinely believe that we learn and continue to learn from a wide variety of experiences in life.

Having said that, I also think there is a lot to be gained from combining this with more formal continuing education – whether that be training courses in softer skills like people management, learning new areas such as digital technologies, or updating your knowledge of industry-specific developments.

A report from consultants KPMG on predictions for the next 20 years said ‘lifelong learning will become a human need’.

“Emotional intelligence, empathy, creative problem-solving, adaptability and the ability to deal with ambiguity will be crucial”.

I couldn’t agree more, which is why we focus on these topics in our own training.

Finding time to acquire new expertise

Most of us do enjoy improving our expertise, acquiring additional skills and learning something new, but it often gets pushed to the bottom of our long to-do lists.

One of the benefits of lockdown has been that some people have had time to do extra training and been able to access a wider variety of courses online. Here in NSW, for example, we have had the government make some TAFE courses free to help people improve their expertise.

I’ve seen this first-hand. We had one lady who had been interested in our ‘train-the-trainer’ courses for quite some time, but never found the time. Then, when we moved online due to COVID, she finally seized the opportunity. She was so happy with the outcome and the possibilities it opened up to her; a whole new career, in fact. And, if it hadn’t been for the pandemic, she may never have made that change.

According to KPMG, the future will see employers taking a greater role in providing and encouraging this ongoing learning. And there will be even greater choice about how and where we access education. I think we have all already noticed there’s already a lot of great online learning available.

And, we at Leading Edge are jumping on board as well – soon we will be launching our own free Wholistic Leadership Webinar. Stay tuned!

Let me know in the comments. For more information or to register for our free upcoming Wholistic Leadership webinar, shoot us an email info@lepd.com.au
